BR Ambedkar was regarded as the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’. He was a famous economist, politician as well as a jurist. He was born on 14 April 1891 in a poor Dalit family. But his hard work and perseverance earned him a respectable place in the community.
He was the one who led a committee that drafted India’s constitution during the Constituent Assembly deliberations. He died on December 6 1956. Every year, his death anniversary is observed on this day. He was a strong advocate for labour and women’s rights and went on to become the first Law Minister in free India.
He was born in a lower-class Dalit Mahar family. He spent most of his life fighting for basic rights for his community. Dalits were considered as untouchables in the society. He was a man with many skills but he regarded himself as a social reformer. His death anniversary allows us to highlight his work and achievements.
Throughout his life, he fought many battles to end the caste system. He worked very hard in his academics and went on to earn a PhD in Economics from a foreign university. He studied at many esteemed universities including Britain, Germany and the United States. In 1917, he earned a Doctorate in Economics from Columbia University.
He always emphasised studies because this is the only tool that will change the age-old restrictive discriminatory practices. His famous words are “Educate, agitate, and organise”. His contributions to uplifting the Dalits as well as other untouchable castes earned him a respectable spot in society. On his death anniversary seminars are organised to highlight his efforts towards society.

I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved.
Equality may be a fiction but one must accept it as a governing principle.
So long as you do not achieve social liberty, whatever freedom is provided by the law is of no avail to you.
