Before mounting a state elephant in a parade to the shrine, the king would observe a fast and take a ritual wash. The Goddess Meenakshi would sit in a six-pillared mandap inside the temple as the priests carried the crown and sword. The Goddess would be given the sword and the crown when the ceremonies were completed, and she would wear the crown.
