Ramadan 2024: Date and Time

The holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, is anticipated to commence its sacred observance on the evening of April 3, 2024, and draw to a close on the evening of May 2, 2024. As per the Islamic lunar calendar, this is a time when Muslims worldwide embark on a journey of spiritual cleansing moment.

Ramadan 2024: How It Is Celebrate

“Suhur” refers to the pre-dawn meal, and “iftar” refers to the dinner eaten at sunset to break the fast. Fasting during Ramadan is believed to have spiritual benefits. Ramadan is not solely a time of penance, but rather a period for Muslims to exercise self-control as part of one of the pillars of Islam, “ṣawm” meaning “to refrain.” While fasting during Ramzan is the most well-known aspect of ṣawm, it encompasses refraining from food, drink, sexual activity, and all forms of evil between dawn and dusk. This includes avoiding impure thoughts and actions, as they can be as detrimental to the fast as consuming food or drink.

Muslims typically come together in their homes or mosques after sunset prayer to break their fast during the month of Ramadan. This meal is called ifṭār and is often shared with family and friends. The ifṭār usually begins with dates, apricots, or sweetened milk, as was the tradition of Muhammad. At night, additional prayers called the tawarīḥ prayers are offered, preferably performed in congregation at the mosque. During these prayers, the entire Qurʾān may be recited over the course of the month of Ramadan.
