How to Choose the Best Wedding DJ for Your Big Day

After you seal your commitment to each other at the wedding, there’s no better way to celebrate your new life together than with music. It’s the heart of the reception and sets the tone for your guests’ experience at the event. So, ensuring your wedding DJ hits all the right notes is a must! But how do you select the right wedding DJ? These tips and questions can help.

Wedding DJs Versus Live Music

According to The Knot.com’s most recent Real Weddings Study, 70% of couples hire a DJ for their wedding. There are pros and cons to both live music and a wedding DJ. While pros in the DJ category include more variety in song choices, fewer breaks in the music, songs are as recorded (not a cover version), and more flexibility in taking song requests, typically, the biggest plus is that wedding DJs are more economical than a live band.

Comparing Potential Wedding DJs

Although the decision to hire a wedding DJ may be relatively simple, choosing the best fit for your special day can be a challenge. In most cases, you’ll have plenty of options from which to choose, and often, family and friends even think they are DJ material. However, asking these questions of each potential wedding DJ can help you more easily compare.

  • Are you available for our wedding date? Ensuring potential DJs are available should be the first question on your list and one of the easiest ways to narrow your options.
  • How many weddings have you done? Weddings are in their own category, so you don’t want a DJ with only party and corporate event experience testing the waters for weddings on your big day.
  • Will our wedding be your only event that day? It’s common for a wedding DJ to book more than one event in a day. But at the same time, you’re not paying for a tired DJ, so make sure you’re comfortable with the number of events and your spot on the list.
  • Will you be our DJ? If the person you’re speaking with won’t be DJing, ask to talk to them as well to get the best gauge of their personality and musical style.
  • Do you have references? Hearing from those who’ve used a particular wedding DJ before is the best way to feel confident in your choice. Ideally, reach out to two to three references.
  • How do you get the crowd moving? There’s nothing worse than a party at a standstill, and your wedding DJ is key to getting the energy up and keeping it going.
  • Is your set list predetermined? DJs often have at least a partially predetermined setlist to play at weddings. But if you want them to play or avoid certain songs, make sure they’re willing to do that.
  • Can you provide samples of your work? Likely you’ll find samples on their website, but if not, ask for them. It’s essential that you know in advance if their catalog is the style of music you want to be played and that it’s up-to-date.
  • Can you also emcee the event? Typically they will emcee the wedding party entrance, father-daughter dance, toasts, and any other announcements. But you’ll want to confirm this with each option so there are no surprises.
  • How will you dress? This may seem like an awkward question, but if you’re having an ultra-formal or super-casual event, it’s helpful if you’re on the same page regarding attire.
  • Are you familiar with our venue? If so, that typically ensures that setup and breakdown will go smoother. It doesn’t hurt to check with the venue to confirm their experience with the wedding DJ, too. If not, ask what equipment they require as well as if they will also use lighting or special effects.
  • What’s your backup plan? Ideally, your big day will be smooth sailing, but sometimes things happen. Ask how the DJ handles equipment malfunctions or if they need to cancel last minute. Ask their policy if you were to cancel or reschedule as well.
  • What are your rates and payment terms? Wedding DJs typically charge by the hour, through packages, or some combination of both. If by package, ask for a detailed breakdown of what’s included. If by the hour, ask for an estimated quote that includes setup, breakdown, and the event itself. Also, confirm whether you pay in installments or with a down payment and a final payment.
  • Do you have the required insurance for our wedding? Your DJ should have liability insurance, plus any insurance required by your city or venue. Double-check with your wedding planner and/or venue on what is needed as well.

Additional Planning Tips

To make sure you get the wedding DJ of your dreams and the process goes smoothly, consider these additional tips:

  • Book early – Ideally, eight to nine months ahead of your big day to have the best chance of booking your preferred wedding DJ.
  • Communicate clearly – Surprises on your wedding day are rarely good. So, once you book, discuss the best way to communicate with your DJ, be crystal clear in your expectations, and keep detailed notes.
  • Choose the right wedding venue – An all-in-one wedding venue will make planning the easiest, but you also want a team that will truly partner with you on the details to bring your wedding vision to life, from the decorations to the catering to the wedding DJ and more.

Whatever you choose for your wedding DJ, venue, or any other detail, take time to enjoy not just the day but the planning as well, and make the event uniquely your own!
