International Widows’ Day– The day is observed on 23rd June every year globally. The day was recognised by the United Nations to honour and address the injustice as well as struggles faced by the millions of widows. HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS’ DAY
Back in 2010, the United Nations General Assembly on 23rd June officially made the day as
International Widows Day. Although the day was first observed in 2005 and has been celebrated since then by Loomba Foundation. The foundation was founded by Rajinder Loomba, a member of the House of Lords of the U.K. in order to tackle the issues faced by the millions of widows living in under-developed and developing countries.
The inspiration behind this initiative after seeing his own mother going through a hard time after his father died in 1954. Later, in 2005, he formed a Loomba Foundation and led a global campaign for 5 years to get recognition from the U.N. With dedication and constant determination United Nations General Assembly officially recognised 23rd June as International Widows Day. It is important to think about those who have lost their loved ones and are struggling to survive.
