PM Modi receives Bhutan’s highest civilian honour and dedicates it to 1.4 billion Indians
Thimphu, March 22 (IANS) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, for his efforts in strengthening India-Bhutan ties. This prestigious award was presented to PM Modi by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in a ceremony in Tendrelthang, Thimphu, making him the first foreign leader to receive this accolade.
Bhutan expressed gratitude towards PM Modi, stating, “It is an honor that a statesman of such stature is a true friend of the kingdom. Prime Minister Modi is a strong supporter of Bhutan’s national vision for self-reliance and development.” The award citation acknowledged PM Modi’s personal achievements, leadership, and his role in bolstering the friendship between India and Bhutan.
The citation highlighted India’s ascendancy as a global power under PM Modi’s guidance and celebrated the special relationship between Bhutan and India. It also praised PM Modi as an exemplary leader, under whom India has emerged as the fastest-growing economy globally, on track to become the third-largest economy by 2030.
PM Modi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy was commended for enhancing South Asian cooperation and fostering progress. The citation emphasized, “Prime Minister Modi’s friendship and support for all of Bhutan’s objectives and initiatives have strengthened our bonds like never before.”
Upon receiving the award, PM Modi dedicated it to the people of India, calling it a testament to the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. He expressed his gratitude on social media, writing, “Honoured to be conferred with ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo’ Award by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians.”
The Order of the Druk Gyalpo is the highest decoration in Bhutan, established for lifetime achievement. It holds precedence over all other orders, decorations, and medals in the country. This esteemed award has been conferred upon only four individuals till date, including Her Majesty Royal Queen Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck and the Chief Abbot of Bhutan, His Holiness Je Khenpo Trulku Ngawang Jigme Choedra.
Overall, PM Modi’s recognition with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo underscores the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan, further strengthening the bond between the two neighboring nations.
