Roseanne Cherrie Barr was born on November 3, 1952, in a Jewish family to Jerome Hershel “Jerry” Barr and Helen née Davis in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father was a salesman while her mother was a bookkeeper and cashier. She was the eldest of four kids.
Her paternal grandparents had emigrated from Russia while her maternal grandparents were immigrants from Austria-Hungary and Lithuania. Her great-grandparents were victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
Her maternal grandmother was a devout Jewish and this had a great influence on Barr. However, their parents concealed their Jewish heritage from their neighbors and were also involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Barr suffered from Bell’s palsy when she was left paralyzed on the left side of her face temporarily. She gave her first public performance when she was six years old. It was a lecture at the LDS churches around Utah. She was elected president of a Mormon youth group.
Barr met with an accident when she was 16 and suffered from a traumatic brain injury. She had to undergo therapy at Utah State Hospital for eight months for behavioral changes.
Barr became a stand-up comedian in 1980 and gained much fame with her performance in Roseanne which was aired from the late 1980s to early 1990’s. She also had her share of brickbats especially for her antics while performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a nationally aired baseball game on July 25, 1990. Barr was once offered the role of Peg Bundy in Married… with Children but she turned it down. Her punch line was to refer to homemakers or housewives as “domestic goddesses”.
Barr was roped in to play the role of Roseanne Conner in the sitcom Roseanne. The sitcom is a supposedly family comedy about factory workers. The show went on air on October 18, 1988. It garnered an audience of 21.4 million households, making it the highest-rated debut of that season.
Roseanne aired for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997. The show earned Barr a number of awards which included an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Kids’ Choice Award, and three American Comedy Awards. Barr was paid $40 million for the last two seasons and she was the second-highest-paid woman in show business at the time, after Oprah Winfrey.
Barr also appeared thrice in Saturday Night Live from 1991 to 1994. She co-hosted the show with then-husband Tom Arnold in 1992.
She released a book My Lives in 1994 and also has the honor of being the first comedian to host the MTV Video Music Awards on her own. She enacted the role of a Wicked Witch of the West in a production of The Wizard of Oz at Madison Square Garden in 1998.
In 2003 she appeared in a cooking show called Domestic Goddess and a reality show called The Real Roseanne Show. She released her third book named Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm in 2011.
