Shillong Teer is an archery event linked to Lottery which is held daily except Sunday. Lotteries have been banned in most parts of the country except in some North Eastern states and Kerala. The event is a bit different from other lotteries since the winner is not decided by draws but by the number of arrows that hit the target. The archery event is held in a ground in Shillong.
A group of fifty archers participate in the event after paying a fee of INR 300. The archers shoot arrows at a target in two phases. The lottery holder whose ticket bears the number that is equal to the number of arrows that has hit the target is the winner.
The Shillong Teer is a legal lottery that is held under strict supervision and transparent with the full blessing of the Meghalaya Government. Lotteries can only be conducted under government supervision. However illegal lotteries are also organized but they are run by criminal elements and are neither legal nor transparent. The proceeds of such lotteries often go into the pocket of criminal elements. Government-run lottery proceeds go into the coffers of the state and are used for social projects.
