23 lakh Indian diaspora are reinforcing Indo-Canadian relations: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, February 21 (IANS) – Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh met with a high-level delegation led by Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan province, on Wednesday. Singh highlighted the significant role played by the Indian diaspora in reinforcing relations between New Delhi and Ottawa and contributing to the development of both nations.

Singh emphasized the presence of the Indian diaspora in the Canadian Parliament and cabinet as a testament to the longstanding relations between the two countries. He also acknowledged the positive contributions made by the Indian community, acting as a bridge between the two nations and mentioned PM Narendra Modi’s invitation to India’s diaspora to do research in premier institutions under the VAIBHAV fellowship programme.

The meeting also discussed cooperation and collaboration in various areas such as Electric Vehicles, Cyber Physical System, Quantum Technologies, Future Manufacturing, Green Hydrogen Fuel, Deep Ocean Mining, and more. Singh highlighted India’s establishment of the ‘Anusandhan’ National Research Foundation under PM Modi’s leadership, prioritizing research in technology and science. He also expressed the government’s keenness to welcome non-governmental organizations to contribute to technology development and support.

Premier Scott Moe spoke of the great strides made in the multidimensional relationship between Canada and India. He emphasized the growth of the relationship between India and Saskatchewan, particularly after opening their office in Delhi, and expressed their resolve to work with India for collective growth.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met with Premier Scott Moe and praised the Indians in Canada for serving as a bridge between the two nations. He appreciated Moe’s strong support for the partnership, looking forward to deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Saskatchewan, home to 15,660 Indians, according to the 2021 census, has a significant Indian-origin community that has served as a bridge between India and Canada. The province’s exports to India stand at more than $1 billion, making up roughly a third of Canada’s total exports to the country. Additionally, the province has a trade and investment office in New Delhi.

The meeting exemplifies the strengthening relations between India and Canada, focusing on collaboration and mutual growth, especially through the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora in reinforcing ties and contributing to the development of both nations.
