Meze: The Greek Tapas
Meze, in Greece, is an entire social experience. As you sit down at a rustic wooden table, servers bring out plate after plate of various delicacies, transforming your meal into a feast for the senses. From dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) to keftedes (Greek meatballs), meze is about variety, sharing, and community.

Where to Eat
When it comes to meze, the cozier the setting, the better the experience. Local tavernas are your best bet. Look for places that don’t just serve tourists but are frequented by locals as well.
Ask your server for recommendations; chances are, they’ll bring out a dish you’ve never heard of but will love. Sometimes these establishments even offer live Greek music, turning your dinner into an unforgettable experience.
Moussaka: The Comfort Food
There’s something incredibly comforting about diving into a piping-hot dish of moussaka. The blend of tender eggplant, seasoned meat, and creamy béchamel is almost therapeutic. This is a dish best enjoyed slowly, allowing you to savor each bite and appreciate the layers of flavor.

Where to Eat
To get the most authentic moussaka experience, opt for restaurants that take pride in their homemade recipes. These are usually the smaller, family-run eateries where Grandma’s recipe rules the kitchen. Often, these dishes take time to prepare, but the wait is part of the experience. The aroma that fills the air as you wait is a delicious prelude to what’s coming.
Gyros and Souvlaki: Quick and Tasty
These are the go-to street foods of Mykonos. Quick to prepare but never compromising on flavor, gyros and souvlaki are perfect for those moments when you want something satisfying but don’t want to take a break from your day of exploring.
Where to Eat
Gyros and souvlaki stands are plentiful, especially in busy areas like Mykonos Town. Look for stands where you see locals lining up; that’s a good sign the food is top-notch. Some stands offer variations like adding fries inside the wrap or a dash of paprika for an extra kick.

Loukoumades: The Sweet Finish
After a meal loaded with rich flavors, a plate of loukoumades is the perfect sweet finale. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, these honey-soaked doughnuts are a bite-sized slice of heaven. You’ll find yourself reaching for ‘just one more’ until the plate is mysteriously empty.
Where to Eat
Bakeries and dedicated dessert shops are your best bet for high-quality loukoumades. If you’re lucky, you might also stumble upon a street vendor specializing in these treats, filling the air with the sweet scent of fried dough and honey. Some establishments even offer toppings like crushed walnuts or a dusting of powdered sugar to make them even more irresistible.

This not only makes for a more enjoyable eating experience, but it also ensures that visitors are getting the most nutritional value out of their food.
Another benefit of visiting a farm for picking is the chance to connect with nature and learn more about where our food comes from. Many of these farms offer educational tours and activities that teach visitors about the growing process, the importance of sustainable agriculture, and the history of the farm. This can be a fun and educational experience for both children and adults, and can help foster a greater appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into producing our food.
