Karnataka Police Arrests ‘Bhikumhatre’ aka MumbaichaDon Over Congress Manifesto Post, BJP Offers Legal Aid

The Karnataka Police have arrested a man from Goa for an alleged post on X, which has now been deleted, against the Congress manifesto. The arrested man, who in his social media handles goes by BhikuMhatre (@MumbaichaDon), allegedly posted that the Congress wants to take away the wealth from Hindus and distribute it among Muslims because it hates the Muslims. The same charges have been leveled against Congress by the BJP. The post was made against Congress last month.

The man was arrested after a Bengaluru citizen and Congress worker filed a complaint with the cybercrime police on April 29. A case was registered under section 153(a) of the Indian Penal Code and 66(c) of the Information Technology Act against the X user.

Immediately after his arrest, the user posted a notice which was issued by X after it received an order from the magistrate of Bengaluru City regarding his X account ‘@MumbaichaDon’.

The notice read,

“This court order obligates X to produce information related to your account. We cannot give you any legal advice, but suggest that you may wish to seek your own legal counsel in this matter.”

The user further wrote on X, “So it seems CONgress wants to intimidate me for speaking the truth. I’m ready to fight against any injustice & will take full judicial course even if that means approaching the highest court, as I have never written anything which may be called inflammatory or communal.”

BhikuMhatre’s son, identified as Nagesh Naik, also said,

“My father @MumbaichaDon has been arrested by @DgpKarnataka @CPBlr @BlrCityPolice. A mail was sent by Twitter and suddenly in the evening, the police showed up at the doorstep and took away my father! FIR is totally NOT pertinent! #ReleaseBhikuMhatre.”

The BJP has also come in support of the user and has criticized the Karnataka government over the arrest. BJP MP Tejaswi Surya has termed the arrest as a blatant abuse of power by the Congress-led government of the State and has vowed that it will fight the injustice both inside courts and outside.

Union minister Smriti Irani has stated that she has spoken to Tejaswi Yadav regarding the development and the BJP has assured all legal aid will be provided to the arrested man.

As stated, the Karnataka Police have arrested the X user whose social account goes by the name ‘BhikuMhatre,’ known as ‘MumbaichaDon’ on social media, for inciting communal hatred.

The user is also accused of distorting a statement made by the Karnataka CM and using it to whip up communal hatred.
