Delhi Police increases security outside PM’s residence in response to AAP protest call

New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) The Delhi Police have heightened security outside the Prime Minister’s residence in anticipation of a protest scheduled by the Aam Aadmi Party for Tuesday. The AAP has not been granted permission to hold the protest. Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to avoid certain routes including Kemal Ataturk Marg, Safdarjung Road, Akbar Road, and Teen Murti Marg.

A senior police official stated, “We have deployed layers of security to maintain law and order in the area.” Commuters are urged to utilize public transport and plan their travel if heading towards ISBT/Railway Stations/Indira Gandhi Airport. The security measures and advisory were implemented following AAP minister Gopal Rai’s announcement of a ‘gherao’ at the Prime Minister’s residence to protest the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by the ED.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 and remanded to ED custody until March 28, facing allegations of involvement in an excise policy scam favoring specific individuals. The AAP leader has denied the allegations and accused the Central government of manipulating investigative agencies for political gain. The ED has referred to Kejriwal as the “kingpin and key conspirator” in the alleged scam.

Gopal Rai also mentioned plans for a ‘mega protest’ nationwide. The Delhi Police have urged the public to maintain patience, observe traffic rules, and follow directions of traffic personnel. The AAP’s protest call comes amid escalating tensions between the party and the Central government. More updates to follow as the situation develops.
