Experts propose making cancer a notifiable disease.

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Emphasizing the critical challenges and the government’s efforts to combat cancer, experts have suggested making it a notifiable disease for accurate data and follow-up. Joint Secretary of Health Ministry, Indrani Kaushal, highlighted the issue at a FICCI roundtable, citing alarming projections by ICMR.

Kaushal pointed out the high cancer burden in India, with Odisha being one of the top contributors to the incidence rate. Experts noted the lack of comprehensive cancer care centers in Eastern states, hindering access to vital treatments like radiotherapy. Raj Gore from FICCI stressed the urgent need for more facilities nationwide.

Gore highlighted the shortage of cancer care centers, stating, “Our focus should be on better patient outcomes through timely treatment, not just awareness.” Experts also called for enhanced prevention efforts and training programs for healthcare workers to improve early detection. District hospitals need better equipment for effective diagnosis and screening, the experts mentioned.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s emphasis on tackling the growing cancer burden in India was echoed by experts at the FICCI roundtable. With the rising number of cancer cases each year, the need for a comprehensive approach, including timely treatment and improved access to care facilities, was highlighted as crucial.
