Meta removes Facebook News, to stop paying news publishers

Meta announced that it will not be entering into new commercial deals for traditional news content in Australia, France, and Germany, and will not offer new Facebook products specifically for news publishers in the future. The company will be shutting down Facebook News in the US and Australia in early April, after deprecating it in the UK, France, and Germany last year.

According to a statement by Meta, people in these countries will still be able to view news on Facebook through their feed, and publishers will have access to their accounts and Pages to post news article links and content. Existing agreements with news publishers in Australia, France, and Germany related to Facebook News will remain in place until their expiration.

Meta stated that this decision is part of an effort to align investments with products and services that are most valued by users. The company reported a significant drop in the number of people using Facebook News in Australia and the US last year, with news making up less than 3% of content in the Facebook feed globally.

Despite the changes, news organizations can still utilize products like Reels and the ads system to reach wider audiences and drive traffic to their websites. Meta emphasized that publishers will retain 100% of the revenue generated from outbound links on Facebook, providing an alternative monetization strategy.
