Number of vehicles jumping red light in Delhi doubles: Traffic violation on the rise

The national capital has witnessed a significant increase in traffic violations in the first three months of the year. According to data released by Delhi Police, the number of vehicles caught jumping red lights at signals has surged by 200 per cent compared to the same period last year. The violations were detected through CCTV cameras installed at key intersections across the city.

The data reveals that the majority of red light violations occurred in the southern part of Delhi, particularly in areas like Nauroji Nagar, Naraina, Moolchand, Bhikaji Cama Place, Moti Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, and Andrews Ganj. Delhi Police issued a total of 69,296 challans to vehicles violating traffic rules, a significant increase from the 21,089 challans issued during the same period last year.

To monitor and crack down on such violations, Delhi Police has deployed 3D radar-based Red-Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras at intersections. These cameras help identify vehicles that jump red lights and automatically send the details to the control room for issuing e-challans under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Red light jumping is a common traffic violation in Delhi and a major cause of road accidents. In response, Delhi Police has launched a campaign to tackle such reckless behavior. A Delhi Police official highlighted the importance of obeying traffic signals to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists on the road.

Apart from RLVD cameras, Delhi Police is exploring innovative technologies such as CCTV cameras, automated monitoring systems, and digital platforms to improve traffic management and enforcement of traffic rules. Other prevalent traffic violations in the city include riding without helmets, lack of valid pollution certificates, drunk driving, wrong-side driving, and triple riding.
