Papmochani Ekadashi Vrata’s story

The glory of Papmochani Ekadashi has been elucidated by Lord Krishna himself to Arjuna. Krishna then narrated the story of Papmochani Ekadashi. Long ago, there was a king named Mandhata. He asked sage Lomash how a man can be free from the sins he commits knowingly and unknowingly?

Rishi Lomash told him the story of the respected Sage, the son of Chyavana sage, who was engaged in penance in the beautiful forest named Chaitrarath. An apsara named Manjughosha was enamored by the beauty of young Sage, who was engrossed in deep penance. She tried to attract his attention but to no avail. Finally, the Apsara, took the help of Kamadeva, the God of love passing by. Kamadeva fired his flowery arrow at the Sage, and Sage’s penance was broken.

The Apsara was successful in her endeavor, and the Sage became apprehensive. After this, forgetting the penance of Shiva, the Sage started enjoying with the Apsara. But after many years, when he realized his mistake, he felt guilty. The Sage was filled with guilt and rage at the same time and cursed the Apsara to become a vampire. A devastated Apsara started praying for freedom from the curse.

At the same time, Devarshi Narada came there and advised both Apsara and Rishi to observe the fast of Papmochani Ekadashi to get rid of sins. Both of them fasted on Papmochani Ekadashi according to the rituals prescribed by Narada. They were freed from sins, and Apsara was also released from the curse and went to heaven after regaining her beauty.
