Pandemic Collides With Europe’s Migrant Crisis to Set Off a Calamity in Greece

ATHENS — The hundreds of asylum seekers crammed into Europe’s largest refugee camp, on the Greek island of Lesbos, had for years bridled at their squalid situations and the limitless delays in resolving their fates. Then got here the coronavirus and its strict containment measures, which compounded their distress.

The mix proved explosive, pushing frustrations over a tipping level this week, when some camp residents burned down the Moria camp throughout a protest over their quarantine, a determined act that has challenged Europe’s leaders as soon as once more to give you a lasting resolution to the migration disaster.

By Thursday afternoon, a third fireplace in two days had erupted at Moria, destroying what little was left untouched by arson assaults earlier in the week and stranding practically 12,000 of its residents in the wild amongst tombstones in a close by cemetery and on rural and coastal roads. One refugee in the late levels of being pregnant skilled belly pains on Wednesday evening whereas sheltering on a highway close to the camp, and was rushed to a hospital to give beginning.

“Virtually if not the entire lodging in and across the web site has been destroyed,” stated Theodoros Alexellis, a Lesbos-based official for the United Nations’ refugee company.

The camp’s destruction has prompted soul-searching amongst European leaders who’ve traditionally been accused of doing little to alleviate struggling in camps like Moria. On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron of France stated that his authorities was working with Germany to collectively welcome a number of the Moria migrants.

“We should present solidarity with Greece and in addition reside up to European values,” Mr. Macron stated.

Within the brief time period, Greek authorities officers and native assist organizations had but to formalize plans to rehouse a lot of the camp’s former residents as of Thursday afternoon. Discussions had been difficult by teams of Greek islanders who, angered by the presence of migrants on the island, arrange roadblocks on Thursday morning to cease the passage of a medical crew from Medical doctors With out Borders and Greek navy personnel in search of to attain the burned-out web site and its environment.

Greater than 400 unaccompanied youngsters had been transferred off the island by Thursday morning to safe lodging on the Greek mainland. However no different former residents of Moria can be allowed to go away the island, Stelios Petsas, a Greek authorities spokesman, stated in a information briefing on Thursday afternoon.

Round 1,000 residents can be quickly housed on a passenger ferry, in accordance to Notis Mitarachi, Greece’s minister of immigration and asylum. A whole bunch extra can be positioned on two naval vessels, one in every of which has arrived on the island, in accordance to Mr. Petsas.

It was unclear the place the remaining 10,000 migrants could be housed in the approaching days. However in the long run, Mr. Petsas stated all former residents could be held in a new, closed facility.

Moria first turned synonymous with Europe’s strategy to migration in 2015, when it was a temporary staging submit for a giant proportion of the 850,000 primarily Syrian and Afghan refugees who sailed that yr from Turkey to Greek islands like Lesbos.

At the moment, migrants moved swiftly by way of Moria and its equivalents on neighboring islands, with the Greek authorities permitting them to simply cross to the nation’s mainland after which onward by land towards northern Europe.

However that laissez-faire strategy was reversed in 2016, when the remainder of Europe closed its borders to refugees, prompting Greece to cease most new arrivals from leaving the islands, housing them as a substitute in camps.

Constructed for less than 3,000 individuals, Moria shortly turned overcrowded, its inhabitants generally swelling to greater than 20,000. Situations turned notoriously squalid, with residents given restricted entry to well being care and sanitation, and compelled to line up for hours in the solar every for meals that was generally moldy.

As entry to asylum turned more and more sluggish and restricted, assist teams recorded a spike in suicide makes an attempt amongst residents of Moria, amid what docs termed a psychological well being disaster on the camp.

Tensions each inside the camp and between refugees and Greek islanders have grown in recent years. They reached a boiling point in recent days when the authorities placed the entire camp under a medical lockdown after at least 35 residents tested positive for the coronavirus. That led to protests by camp residents, some of whom lit fires on Tuesday night, leading to its destruction.

Moria first became notorious throughout Europe during Greece’s previous leftist government, but the new right-wing Greek administration has taken an even harder line against migration. To deter future arrivals, the Greek authorities have in recent months illegally expelled more than 1,000 recently landed refugees by abandoning them in the open sea in life rafts with no motors or rudders.

The most recent reported expulsion occurred while Moria was on fire. Sixteen migrants were apparently abandoned at sea on Tuesday after landing that morning on the Greek island of Samos, and were later intercepted early on Wednesday by the Turkish Coast Guard and returned to Turkey.

Florida Becomes The First State In The US To Ban Lab-Grown Meat Ban

Florida has become the first State in the US to ban laboratory grown meat. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Wednesday which bans the sale of any form of lab grown meat. The bill is clearly a move to appease the state’s cattle industry.

In a statement the state’s commissioner of agriculture said it was protecting the interests of the state’s farmers as well as the integrity of American agriculture. The lab grown meat ban is also one of the many other pet causes of DeSantis.

DeSantis said just after the bill was signed,

“Today, Florida is fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs to achieve their authoritarian goals,”

In a press release it was said that Florida was negating the World Economic Forum’s goal of forcing the world to eat lab-grown meat and insects.

However it must be remembered that lab grown meat is still not available for the consumers. Lab grown meat is harvested from animal cells and the FDA has given approval to two entities Upside Food and Good Meat to make the lab grown meat. The two companies also do not have any outlets to sell this meat. Till date only two high end restaurants China Chilcano, Chef José Andrés’ high-end Peruvian restaurant in Washington, DC, and Bar Crenn, a Michelin-starred restaurant in San Francisco have served lab grown meat to the consumers. However both these restaurants have stopped featuring the lab grown meat on their menu.

The lab grown meat industry has not even started competing with the farmers but it seems the ban is a way to preempt any such possibility. A section of the population believes that the move is a consequence of a conspiracy theory which stated that the “globalists” are forcing people to eat bugs and live in pods. This theory is also known as the “Great Reset,” which was first coined in 2020 after a World Economic Forum initiative that urged governments to use the pandemic to promote sustainable development. The Right Wing experts connected it with a 2016 World Economic Forum blog post which talked about the possible use of bug protein and a 2013 book about insect farming published by the United Nations.

Lab Grown or cultivated meats are harvested in bioreactors using cells from animals. Startups are working on chicken, fish and beef meat. The promoters of lab grown meat contend that the process will in the long run significantly lower the greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing meat. The process of making lab grown meat involves extracting living cells from an animal and feeding it with nutrients such as proteins, sugars and fats. The final product is much akin to traditionally produced meat in taste as well as composition.

For example the Los Angeles startup Meat uses the plasma of cows to grow meat for ground beef. It takes about three years to raise a cow to 300 kilograms of meat. However 2000 kg of meat can be produced in a year from a single cow’s plasma and there is no need to slaughter the animal also.

However lab grown meat is extremely energy intensive and the startups have not been able to scale up the production and bring the price down.

The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association, an association which represents the traditional meat producers have vehemently opposed cultivated meat citing safety concerns and have been lobbying to prevent the lab grown meat to be referred as beef.

Good Meat, a lab grown Meat Company which is the first in the world to sell lab-grown meat, wrote on X it was “disappointed” by the new Florida law.
