Delhi’s First Transgender Rapper Challenges Norms with Debut Album

New Delhi, March 5 (IANS) Kinari, recipient of the Toto Music Awards 2024, has emerged as a prominent voice for the LGBTQ+ community in Delhi’s rap scene. She aims to make people dance and celebrate through her music, while staying honest and real about her experiences and struggles.

In her debut album ‘Kattar Kinnar’, Kinari draws inspiration from ‘gaana’ songs, ballroom beats, and ‘mujra’ numbers. She collaborates with Khushi Shaikh, a trans model and dancer, whose vlogs and videos feature prominently in the sonic landscape of the album.

The album launch event on March 3 featured a unique performance by Khushi Shaikh, combining ‘mujra’ and rap in a powerful collaboration by trans artistes. The album is set to be officially released in mid-March, showcasing Kinari’s musical journey and personal experiences.

As Delhi’s first transgender rapper, Kinari emphasizes the importance of hip-hop as a medium for self-expression and addressing social issues. She weaves together elements of her heritage and daily life in Delhi into the album, reflecting both the sweet and bitter truths of being a transgender artist.

Despite facing challenges due to her gender identity, Kinari remains dedicated to creating music that she loves and believes in. She draws inspiration from fellow transgender and marginalized artistes, like Miss Boogie, and looks forward to embarking on her first multi-city tour after the album release.

Kinari’s artistic journey exemplifies resilience, creativity, and a commitment to authenticity in the music industry. As she continues to redefine norms and break barriers, her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring musicians and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights.
