Biden challenger Dean Phillips withdraws from US presidential race

Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips announced his withdrawal from the Democratic presidential primary, citing lack of progress in challenging President Joe Biden. Phillips, who started his campaign in October 2023, endorsed Biden after realizing he was not gaining traction as an alternative.

The decision came after ‘Super Tuesday’ where Biden and Trump clinched victories in their party’s primaries. Phillips acknowledged that the alternative was not him and urged supporters to rally behind Biden for the upcoming election. He also reached out to former Ambassador Nikki Haley’s supporters.

“It is clear that alternative is not me,” Phillips said in a post on Wednesday. The three-term congressman emphasized the importance of mobilizing and energizing to support Biden, whom he sees as a man of decency and integrity. Phillips expressed his commitment to ensuring Biden’s success in the presidential race.

With Phillips’ exit from the primary race, Biden’s position as the Democratic nominee remains unchallenged. The congressman’s endorsement further solidifies Biden’s standing within the party. Phillips’ decision reflects a pragmatic approach to supporting a candidate he believes can defeat Trump in the November election.
