Several Unique Aspects of Russia’s Presidential Elections

Moscow, March 17 (IANS) – The ongoing Russian presidential election, the first to be held over three days, has captured the attention of the nation and international observers. The election follows a constitutional update in 2020, allowing President Vladimir Putin to run for a fifth term.

In a historic move, voting for the election will take place not just at polling stations but also online, spanning Friday to Sunday. The inclusion of residents from four new Russian regions adds a unique dimension to the election process. The atmosphere is further intensified by the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Putin, the only candidate meeting the Central Election Commission’s requirements, is running as an independent with the support of major factions. Three other politicians from parliamentary parties will challenge him on the ballot, including the experienced Nikolay Kharitonov and the youngest candidate, Vladislav Davankov.

Forecasts by leading research centers predict a high voter turnout and a significant victory for Putin, with his rivals closely matched in second place. Experts attribute this outcome to factors such as national consolidation and a lack of compelling alternatives to Putin’s leadership. The election results are eagerly anticipated by the Russian populace and international observers.
