BJP and PMK form alliance for Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, March 19 (IANS) – The PMK party has announced a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP-led NDA, planning to contest ten Lok Sabha seats. The decision was made during a meeting at PMK founder Dr. S. Ramadoss’s farmhouse in Tindivanam, Chennai on Tuesday morning. The agreement was signed by PMK State president Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and BJP state president K. Annamalai in the presence of Dr. S. Ramadoss and Union Minister L. Murugan.

The BJP and AIADMK had been vying for an alliance with PMK, but ultimately the Vanniyar party decided to align with the BJP. With a strong presence in many northern districts of Tamil Nadu, the PMK has at least 7 per cent vote bank in the state. While the PMK founder was seeking an alliance with AIADMK, the party state president Anbumani Ramadoss pushed for a BJP alliance, seeing it as a strategic move.

The seat-sharing agreement with the BJP was seen as a way for the NDA to gain significant ground in Tamil Nadu. PMK’s decision to align with the BJP comes after much speculation and discussions within the party. While some leaders favored an alliance with AIADMK, Anbumani Ramadoss’s decision ultimately prevailed in favor of joining forces with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The move is expected to impact the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, with PMK bringing its base of support to the table for the BJP-led NDA. This alliance will be crucial in determining the political dynamics in the state ahead of the elections.
