Volkswagen to introduce performance-oriented cars in India, targeting smaller cities

Volkswagen India aims for a 15% growth in 2024, with a focus on smaller cities for expansion. The company plans to introduce performance-oriented cars to cater to the rising demand for premium offerings across India.

According to a report by PTI, Volkswagen is looking to emphasize its GT-badged passenger vehicles in India, including models like the Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. These cars come with GT trim and are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, with a new 1.0-litre engine also in the pipeline to enhance affordability and tap into the performance-oriented vehicle segment.

Ashish Gupta, Brand Director at Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, highlighted the success of the GT trims on the Taigun and Virtus models in creating a new performance sub-segment. Gupta mentioned that the growing demand for top-of-the-line features, safety, and performance among consumers is driving the popularity of these offerings, with customers willing to pay a premium for such features.

Gupta further emphasized that the appeal of the GT brand extends beyond metro cities, with 20 to 25 per cent of GT sales coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. The introduction of the GT Plus Sport and GT Line models is expected to bolster Volkswagen’s position in the performance-oriented car market in India, setting the stage for continued growth in the coming years.
