Vikram Samvat 2079 is starting from April 2 this year, as per the Gregorian calendar. This year in the month of Chaitra, along with the Hindu New year, and Chaiti Navratri, there will be many other festivals also celebrated, such as Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Mesha Sankranti, Gauri Puja, Hanuman Jayanti, and more.
Hindu New Year begins on the first day of the month of Chaitra or on the Pratipada Tithi of Chaitra Navratri. The new year is not only a new beginning but also teaches us to move forward continuously, to learn something new all the time.
With the beginning of Vikram Samvat or Hindu Nav varsh, all the auspicious work starts again. The Hindu New Year was started by the Ujjain emperor Vikramaditya. It has twelve months in a year and seven days in a week, the same as a gregorian calendar. Before the birth of Vikramaditya, Ujjain was ruled by Shakas.
The Hindu New Year in Maharashtra is known as Gudi Padwa.
